Economic growth is one of the most important criteria for the prosperity and welfare of society, as foreign trade plays an important role and a key engine for economic growth, because it plays an important role in the field of competitiveness in global markets. The research aims to analyze the reality of foreign trade in Iraq and know its contribution to economic growth, in order to achieve this objective; the research relied on the analytical descriptive approach and the quantitative method to analyze the impact of foreign trade on economic growth in Iraq for the period (1990-2020). Finally ,the research reached a set of conclusions, including that foreign trade has an important role in the Iraqi economy through getting foreign currency to meet the import needs of Iraqi society, as well as the analysis shows a two-direction causal relationship between exports and economic growth (GDP) as well as that exports have a positive and clear impact on GDP, since the increase in exports by (1%) leads to a increase GDP by (1.01%), meanwhile, imports negatively affected GDP, which increase imports by (1%) leads to decrease GDP by (0.19 %). Thus, the Iraqi government should diversify exports and reduce dependence on unnecessary imports by promoting domestic production and investment projects.
